Traditional Norwegian Knitting

The title of this post could be Non-traditional Norwegian knitting.
I work out most of my patterns based on my body shape. I don't suit dropped shoulders (who does?!) and most traditional Norwegian jumpers and cardigans (genser & kofter) have dropped shoulder. Like this...

Dropped shoulder cardigans and jumpers. Clockwise from top left:
Gudbrandsdalskofta, Østerdalskoften, Fanagenser, Setesdalgenser.
All that fabric in the sleeves and under the arms make for a very bulky garment. These were originally worn as jackets, so it wasn't an issue, but today, if you want to wear a jacket or coat over one of these, it had better be a big jacket or coat... or maybe an 80's, batwing throwback.

My knits have either raglan sleeves or round yokes. I also knit on larger needles, because (like most of us) my hands prefer a certain gauge of needle. My preference is between 4mm and 7mm. 4.5mm and 5mm being optimal. I can knit a ribbed border with 3mm/3.5mm, but a whole jumper, or even a hat, for that matter, is a strain.

The larger needles also means that the pattern is larger, which I really like.
My design: Fanagenser with raglan sleeves.

My design: Setesdalgenser with round yoke.

I've made meticulous notes, by hand, of my versions of these classics, but they're almost written in code and I'm not sure they'll be any good to anyone else, but I'm going to share them here anyway. As I've said many times before, the main reason for sharing patterns on this blog is to preserve them for my own reference. I do occasionally make patterns available for others, which often means making a detailed and downloadable version. This is something I'd love to have time to do with all of my patterns, but single parenting, work and study are all-consuming, these days.

I hope to have time in the future to actually write out all of my patterns, but until then, here are my Fanagenser notes.

Btw, that nail varnish is Classy Nude Gel Lacquer by IsaDora.

Aprés Ski Raglan Cardigan

I'm posting these notes for myself, which is why I'm not publishing it as a pattern.
They may be clear enough for others to follow, but maybe not.

Fake Cable Pom Pom hat

Before washing.

Years ago, I made a hat for my niece. I didn't make a note of the pattern, but I remember what it looked like. It looked a lot like this hat (but, obviously, my memory tells meit was infinitely better). It looked more like a real cable stitch, and I think I know now how I did it - it was a 3x1 rib. I'll try that some other time.

For this hat:
CO96, Work 2x2 rib with 4mm, switch to 4.5mm, place marker at the start of the round (2 Knit stitches)
P1, *K2, P2 to end for 6 rounds
P2, K2 for 6 rounds
K1, *P2, K2 for 6 rounds
Continue like this, staggering the rib by 1 stitch every six rounds.

On the last row, I staggered the stitch to the right instead of the left, so I incorporated it into the pattern... abandoned the pattern -  and continued in standard 2x2 rib.

For the crown:
P2tog all purl stitches, for one round, K2, P1 the next round, K2tog all knit stitches the next round, K1, P1 for one round, then K2 together until you have few enough stitches to finish the hat (8-12st).

I made the pom pom with a pom pom maker, which I love. Available here.

Lima Drops Mittens

I have these mittens that I've knitted in Drops Nedal. They are really basic and the warmest mittens I've ever owned.

Unfortunately they're this undyed, natural colour, which means they look really shabby, even though they are clean.

Because of the challenge I've set myself, to use up all of my existing yarn before buying any new yarn -at which point I will also attempt to remain stashless! - I have to use the yarn I have.

I have Drops Lima, but not Nepal, which is the same aplaca to wool ratio, but DK rather than Aran weight.

I'm going to work out and publish the pattern for both. The pattern will be a single colour design, but I also want to knit something like this.

I found these images on a Russian website, with no pattern. I think I can work out something similar.

Mer info under.

Strikk 2 og to masker sammen (11 m)
